Director MiloÅ¡ Forman adapted E. L. Doctorow’s novel into this sweeping 1981 drama set in early twentieth-century America. Howard E. Rollins Jr. portrays Coalhouse Walker Jr., a pianist whose struggle for dignity becomes a central thread in a story connecting people from very different social worlds. The ensemble also includes Elizabeth McGovern. Against a backdrop of shifting politics, celebrity, and social divisions, the film explores the consequences of injustice and the tensions of a changing country. Its period setting and interwoven narratives bring an ambitious literary work to the screen.
