Hombre (1967) is a Western directed by Martin Ritt and adapted from the novel by Elmore Leonard. Paul Newman plays John Russell, a man raised among Apache people who faces prejudice while traveling with a group of stagecoach passengers. Fredric March and Richard Boone join the cast as danger and competing interests test the travelers' judgment. Photographed by James Wong Howe, the film uses its stark landscape to frame questions about survival, dignity, and moral responsibility. Newman's restrained performance gives this revisionist Western its distinctive edge.
