David Copperfield (1969) features Robin Phillips and Laurence Olivier. A boy endures family hardship, cruel schooling and uncertain prospects before finding mentors and friendships that help him build an independent life. The story follows his growth from vulnerable childhood toward adulthood through encounters with an eccentric array of Dickens characters. This television adaptation of Charles Dickens’s novel features Robin Phillips in the title role and Laurence Olivier among the ensemble. Its appeal lies in the combination of Victorian social detail and a deeply personal coming-of-age journey.
