Ingrid Bergman stars opposite Yul Brynner in this historical drama directed by Anatole Litvak. Bergman plays a troubled woman whose resemblance to the lost Russian grand duchess Anastasia draws her into a scheme involving a former imperial general, played by Brynner. As she learns to inhabit the role, questions of identity and memory complicate the plans of those hoping to profit from her claim. Helen Hayes also appears in the cast as the Dowager Empress. The film combines royal intrigue with an intimate story about uncertainty, belonging, and the possibility of personal reinvention.
